What is Cupping?
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative therapy in which a therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it done for many purposes, including to help with detoxification, pain management, inflammation, improve blood circulation, relaxation and wellbeing, and as a type of a deep-tissue massage.
Although cupping therapy has recently become trendy, with the likes of the Olympic gold medalist in swimming Michael Phelps and former heavyweight champion boxer Anthony Joshua as well as a number of other elite athletes using this therapy to not only improve their performance but help them recover. It was used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese as well as in the Middle East. As a matter of fact it has been mentioned in one of the oldest medical text books Ebers Papyrus where it describes how the Egyptians used it in 1550 B.C.
There are two types of cupping, dry and wet. In wet cupping incisions are made and blood is removed from the body, whereas in dry cupping no incisions are made and no blood is removed from the body.
How does Cupping work?
The medical mechanisms of cupping are based on theories of how the body reacts when cups are applied to areas of the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is believed that disease occurs when there is stagnation of vital energy of life (Qi). Although we do not dismiss this theory we like to apply more of a modern scientific view on its mechanism.
Wet cupping directly removes blood from the site of where the cups are placed. This removes inflammation from the body and may help with pain associated with inflammation. Also when superficial incisions are made for the blood to be able to leave the body, the body naturally releases a chemical called Nitrogen Oxide which acts as a vasodilator improving blood flow to the area. There are more mechanisms at play which we will not discuss here.
Dry cupping works in a similar way, the cups increase blood flow to the area by changing the structure to the cupped area, helping to remove a build-up of tension and toxins from the area.
Moving cupping or massage cupping also helps with myofascial release, improving muscle mobility as well as recovery. This is why you see so many world class athletes utilise cupping as an effective method for recovery.

IASTM
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation
What is IASTM?
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation is a simple, non-invasive form of manual therapy to manipulate or mobilise soft tissue structures of the human body. It is extremely safe and pain free. Instruments are used to mechanically stimulate soft tissue structures to relieve musculoskeletal pain and discomfort and improve overall mobility and function
What is IASTM?
Instruments attempt to break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue. The ergonomic design of these instruments provides the clinician with the ability to locate restrictions and allows the clinician to treat the affected area with the appropriate amount of pressure.
The tools aid in the controlled microtrauma to affected soft tissue structure causes the stimulation of a local inflammatory response. Microtrauma initiates reabsorption of inappropriate fibrosis or excessive scar tissue and facilitates a cascade of healing activities resulting in remodeling of affected soft tissue structures. Adhesions within the soft tissue which may have developed as a result of surgery, immobilization, repeated strain or other mechanisms, are broken down allowing full functional restoration to occur.
What conditions can be treated with IASTM?
- Lower back pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Scar tissue injuries
- Muscle strains
- Shin splints
- Trigger finger
- Neck pain
- Shoulder injuries
- much more
